DSC

The division of Biotechnology owns a differential scanning calorimeter (VP-DSC, Microcal Inc.). This is a sensitive, easy to use differential scanning calorimeter, with an active cell volume of approximately 0.5 ml used for studying samples in solution. The operating temperature of the instrument is in the range of –10ºC to +130ºC, and the instrument has a selectable scan rate in the range of 0ºC to 90ºC per hour (upscan), allowing studies of fast or slow transition processes.

It can be used to measure the intramolecular stability of a broad spectrum of biomolecules, including proteins, nucleic acids, lipids and detergent micellar systems.  The VP-DSC provides fast, accurate transition midpoint (Tm) determination, as well as a thermodynamic profile that can provide insight into the factors that affect conformation and stability.
