Martin Hedström

Associate Professor

Background: My research competence rests within the field of biotechnology with emphasis on bioanalytical chemistry. The focal point is further set at detection principles utilizing biosensors and mass spectrometry (MS). During the recent years, my research has been directed to develop process monitoring tools to be utilized in clinical situations and pharmaceutical manufacturing. My research involves use of biosensor technology and primarily ultra-sensitive affinity sensors with electro-chemical signal transduction. The research strategy is to develop process-monitoring tools for the quantification of contaminating compounds (e.g. bacterial toxins, viral markers) at extremely low levels.
This work addresses contaminant detection both in clinical situations and during protein purification of pharmaceutical products. I am active in the bioanalysis group at the Dept. Biotechnology.

Research interests:

  • Translational and applied research to develop diagnostic tools for global health
  • Capacitive, amperometric and handheld biosensors for e.g. HIV detection
  • Bench assays and  portable flow-through and microarray platforms for biodetection of mycotoxins and microcystins
  • Mass spectrometry
  • Biorefinery
  • Downstream processing with emphasis on chromatographic separation of biomolecules.

Research projects:

  • FP7 EU-project Intelliremed
  • FP7 EU-project GoldFish

Teaching:
